Healthcare in Uruguay

Understanding Uruguay's healthcare system, from public options to private mutualistas for expats.

Overview

Uruguay has an excellent healthcare system, regularly ranked among the best in Latin America. The country offers both public and private options, with most residents and expats using the private system. The private healthcare system is organized through mutualistas (health cooperatives). For a monthly fee of $50-150 USD, members receive comprehensive coverage including hospital care, specialists, medications, and preventive services. Major mutualistas include Médica Uruguaya, CASMU, and the Blue Cross. The British Hospital and Hospital Italiano are popular with expats for their English-speaking staff. Public healthcare (ASSE) is available to residents but typically involves longer wait times and less comfortable facilities. Many people use public services for emergencies while maintaining private coverage for routine care.
